England's Harrison calls smaller balls 'worst decision ever'

England fly-half Zoe Harrison has branded the introduction of smaller rugby balls for the WXV Global Series 'the worst decision ever made' by World Rugby.

The governing body introduced the size 4.5 balls, which are 3% smaller but the same weight as standard size five, aiming to improve accuracy and reduce errors. Harrison, who is currently on a hot streak in the Women's Six Nations, argues the reduced surface area makes kicking more difficult, particularly since she has not used a smaller ball since age 14.

World Rugby implemented the trial following positive feedback from top-tier Sevens players. The tournament features England facing Canada three times, along with Australia and New Zealand. Critics suggest the change could damage the image of the women's game and increase costs for grassroots clubs, though the body plans to review feedback and injury data before deciding on a permanent switch. syntagm.co.za
